"The Write Way Forward:
a Panel on Academic Writing"

Academic writing is always a challenge for early career researchers in their careers. You need to write papers. You need to reply to editors and reviewers. You need to write grant proposals and job applications. The way you write largely decides what you can get. In this panel, we hope to figure out the “write” way forward on the academic path.

What makes a paper great from the reviewer’s perspective?

In my talk, I will take a step-by-step tour of the key elements of good research papers, drawing upon my experiences as a reviewer. I’ll start with the bare minimum — what is needed for a paper to be a paper, in essence — and then proceed towards factors that elevate a paper from good to great, meeting the significance criteria of top journals. Obviously, this involves more than how the paper is written, so toward the end of my talk, I will focus on the characteristics of important and impactful research questions (and offer some tips on how to try to come up with them).

How to get your paper rejected – An editor’s perspective

Drawing from my experience as editor and reviewer, my talk will explore common fallacies that lead to the rejection of papers. I will briefly comment on ways to use generative AI in the writing process, as well as on editorial policies regarding the use of AI in manuscripts.
