(Explosive) cooperation, (social) dilemmas, and (voluntary) sacrifices

Hello NetPLACErs, we couldn't have had a better June start! On the 1st,  Onkar Sadekar from Central European University in Vienna gave a talk focused on higher-order interactions in game theory, where higher-order interactions are game-changing, and explosive cooperation emerges from competitiveness.

In the second part, Onkar raised the topic of volunteering in Academia. In the days preceding the talk, we tweeted about a form to be filled out in order to have an idea of what volunteering means for our community - and Onkar analyzed the results.

80% of the respondents were PhD students. A worrying 40% felt exploited during volunteering work, and more than half would volunteer more if compensated in some way.

These are just a few of the key results of the form. We concluded the session with two big questions to solve: how to diffuse the importance of volunteering? Do you consider reviewing papers as volunteering?
